History

The most important Milestones in the history of Schloss Wartensee

The conference and meeting centre - “Keeper at the Lake” -, positioned high over Lake Constance, is witness to a changing structural past. Its current form has been strongly shaped by its former owners and their social relationships. In particular, this applies to the Blarer family of Wartensee, who as owners of the castle from 1377 to 1719, extended the buildings threefold. Also important in the physical history of the castle was the English composer Robert Lucas Pearsall de Willsbridge, whose son transformed the obsolete structure during the period from 1843 to 1853 into today's representative neo-gothic castle

1243 The knight Heinrich von Wartensee built the western tower as an apartment tower / living quarters.

1377 150 years later two sisters, descendants of Wartensee, married two brothers Walter and Diethelm Blarer from St. Gallen. The castle remained in the possession of descendants of Walter and Klara until 1719.

1757 The St. Gallen monastery bought the castle from a private owner for the amount of 12000 “Gulden”.

1843 English baron Robert Lucas Pearsall de Willsbridge, Knight of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem, acquired the property. After the death of his father, son Robert Lucas transformed the medieval castle to its current gothic form. The park grounds also originate from this period.

1955 After many changes of ownership, the Association of Eastern Switzerland Evangelist “Heimstätte” bought Schloss Wartensee and used it as an educational facility.

1984 Possession of the castle changed to the Evangelist-Reformist Church of Canton St. Gallen. From 1994-1996, the buildings were adapted by the church through generous renovation to the modern needs of a conference and a meeting centre and the management of the centre was transferred into a trust.
